Galapagos
Ships anchor offshore; tender boats required to reach shore.
Daphne Island is a small, restricted volcanic islet in the Galápagos, accessed only by zodiac tender from your anchored ship. It's not a port town; it's a protected research site operated under strict UNESCO rules. You'll land on lava rocks and walk a short naturalist trail to observe blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and marine iguanas in their natural habitat. All visits require a licensed naturalist guide (included with your cruise) and compliance with Galápagos National Park protocols. Port calls typically last 2–4 hours.
Walk a short loop trail on volcanic slopes. Observe blue-footed boobies performing courtship displays, frigatebirds, swallow-tailed gulls, and possibly marine iguanas. Your guide offers expert commentary on geology, evolution, and ecology.
Remain on your ship and observe frigatebirds, boobies, and other seabirds from railings or the observation deck. Binoculars essential; many species visible from water.

Daphne is a protected site with strict safety rules enforced by park rangers. Stay on designated trails; disturbing wildlife or vegetation is prohibited and heavily fined. The terrain is uneven lava rock with sharp edges—wear sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes and watch your footing, especially near the rim. Sunburn and dehydration are real risks; bring sunscreen, a hat, and 1–2 liters of water. The tender ride can be rough in choppy conditions; consider seasickness medication if prone. No medical facility on the island; if injured, you'll return to the ship.
Daphne is not wheelchair accessible. The terrain is rugged lava rock with significant elevation changes and no paved paths. Mobility-impaired guests should consult the ship before booking; many cannot safely participate. Tender transfers require strength and balance to board and disembark.
You do not leave your ship to explore a terminal. The entire experience unfolds on the island itself via tender landing. Before departure, the naturalist briefs passengers on wildlife viewing, photography etiquette, and Park rules. Expect to spend 15–30 minutes suiting up, applying sunscreen, and waiting for tender groups.
Daphne has no sandy beach. Landings occur on lava rock shorelines. Swimming is not permitted in the Park.
No restaurants or food service on Daphne Island. All meals occur aboard your ship. The small size and protected status mean zero commercial infrastructure. Carry water and snacks onshore if the ship permits; many require you to travel light for safety. Lunch is typically a light meal before or after the landing, served in the ship's dining room.
No shops, no vendors, no souvenirs sold on Daphne. The island is a scientific reserve, not a commercial destination. Some ships sell Galápagos-themed merchandise onboard; buy aboard if interested.
Only way to reach Daphne. Naturalist and park ranger accompany all landings. Departure times set by ship; no independent scheduling.
