Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
For first-timers: book the ship's Pig Beach excursion (3–4 hours, ~$120–150 USD). For repeat visitors or budget-conscious: taxi to a nearby reef or beach and snorkel independently.
Best Beach
Thunderball Grotto (near Staniel Cay, 20 min by boat)—calm, scenic, good for snorkeling—or Compass Cay for ray encounters. Both require a tour or private boat; not walk-on.
With Kids
Pig Beach tour ($80–120 USD per adult, kids often discounted) is the main draw—ship-organized excursions are safest, though pricier. Alternatively, easy beach day at a nearby resort beach.
Only 3-4 Hours
Take a shared taxi to Thunderball Grotto or Tropic of Cancer Beach (15 min), swim and snorkel 90 min, taxi back and catch the tender. Skip organized tours.
Cheapest Option
Rent a taxi ($5–8 USD per person) and head to Tropic of Cancer Beach or a public beach near Georgetown. Bring snorkel gear or rent locally ($10–15 USD). Total: ~$30–50 USD per person.
What To Avoid
Pig Beach on your own is tempting but risky—tour operators manage boat landing and pig behavior safely. Avoid long walking; taxis are the norm. Downtown Georgetown is 45 min away and not worth a short day.

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Quick Take

Port Type
Beach & Water Activity Port (Tender)
Best For
Beach lounging, snorkeling, swimming pigs excursions, families seeking laid-back water days.
Avoid If
You dislike tenders, want city exploration, or need structured activities—this is casual beach time.
Walkability
None; port is a tender landing on a beach with no downtown. You'll take taxis or tours from the beach.
Budget Fit
Mid-range. Taxis are cheap ($5–8 USD per person). Beach access is free; water tours run $60–150 USD per person.
Good For Short Calls?
Yes, but factor 30–45 min each way for tender boarding. 4–5 hours ashore is realistic.

Port Overview

Great Exuma is a tender port: ships anchor offshore and ferry passengers to a beach landing. The port itself is minimal—just a beach area with a few vendor stands—so this is not a walking destination. The real appeal is nearby water activities: Pig Beach (swimming with pigs, 30+ min by boat), Thunderball Grotto (snorkeling, 20 min), and easy reef and beach access for independent snorkelers.

Most cruisers either book a ship-organized shore excursion or hire a local taxi to reach nearby beaches and snorkel spots. A typical port call is 6–7 hours, but tender queues can eat 30–45 min on each end, leaving 5–6 hours ashore. Georgetown, the main town, is too far (45 min by taxi) for a short day.

This is a pure leisure port: no shopping, no sightseeing, no culture. Go for beach time, snorkeling, or the Pig Beach experience. If you want a walkable port or activities beyond water and sun, this is not it.

Is It Safe?

Great Exuma is generally safe for cruise tourists. The tender landing area and nearby beaches are frequented by cruise passengers and well-monitored. Petty theft is rare but possible on crowded beaches; leave valuables on the ship.

Tax drivers are informal but reliable for short tourist trips. Agree on pricing before departure. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; use cards or small bills. After dark (post-sunset), stick to ship-organized activities or return to the ship. The beaches themselves are calm and well-visited during cruise hours.

Accessibility & Walkability

The tender landing is a beach, so wheelchair access is not practical—sand is soft, and tender transfers require mobility. Once ashore, most activities (snorkeling, Pig Beach tours, reef visits) are water-based and not wheelchair-accessible. Taxis can take visitors to flatter, paved resort areas if you need solid ground. Consult with crew about accessible alternatives or pre-arrange assistance if needed.

Outside the Terminal

You'll step off the tender directly onto sand. Ahead is a short beach strip lined with a handful of beach bars, souvenir stands, and taxi drivers. It's casual, tropical, and unorganized—no formal port building. The water is calm and clear. To your left and right are empty beaches. Within seconds of arrival, taxi drivers will approach offering rides. This is normal; politely negotiate or wait for a small group to share costs.

Beaches Near the Port

Pig Beach (Staniel Cay)

Shallow, calm water where semi-wild pigs wade. Clear, warm water perfect for photos. Usually accessed via organized tour; independent visits require private boat.

Distance
30+ min by boat.
Cost
$80–150 USD (ship tour); $60–80 USD (shared private boat).
Best for
Bucket-list photo op, families, first-timers.

Thunderball Grotto

Shallow snorkeling spot with rock formations and calm water. Excellent visibility, colorful fish, and no crowds early in the day.

Distance
20 min by boat.
Cost
$60–120 USD (organized tour); $30–50 USD (shared boat).
Best for
Snorkelers, photographers.

Compass Cay

Nurse rays swim in shallow water; good snorkeling and a quieter alternative to Pig Beach. Clear water and a small bar onshore.

Distance
25 min by boat.
Cost
$70–130 USD (tour); $40–60 USD (shared boat).
Best for
Snorkelers, ray encounters, smaller groups.

Tropic of Cancer Beach

Public beach near the port with calm water, good for snorkeling and swimming. Less structured; bring your own snorkel or rent locally.

Distance
10–15 min by taxi.
Cost
Free.
Best for
Budget travelers, independent snorkelers, quick beach days.

Local Food & Drink

Beach food at the tender landing is casual and tourist-oriented: conch salads, fish and chips, sandwiches, and tropical drinks ($8–15 USD per item). Quality is variable and prices are high. Most ship-organized excursions include lunch or snacks.

If you take a taxi to a nearby resort beach or the small settlement on Cay, you'll find casual Caribbean restaurants. Conch salad is the local specialty. Bring snacks and water from the ship if you plan an independent beach day—vendors at the port charge cruise-tourist premiums.

Shopping

The tender landing has a few souvenir stands selling T-shirts, straw hats, jewelry, and Bahamas trinkets. Prices are high and quality is typical tourist-shop fare. No serious shopping—save time for water activities instead. If you need supplies (sunscreen, snacks), bring them from the ship or ask crew for a pharmacy run (unlikely given port timing).

Money & Currency

Currency
Bahamian Dollar (BSD) and US Dollar (USD)
USD Accepted?

Best months
December–April (dry, calm seas, 75–85°F).
Avoid
August–October (hurricane season, heat, humidity).
Temperature
75–85°F (Dec–Apr); 80–90°F (May–Nov).

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Tender boarding is first-come, first-served. Queue early to maximize time ashore; the last tender departs 30–60 min before all-aboard.
  • Hire a shared taxi directly from the beach—much cheaper than ship excursions for simple beach/snorkel trips, but skip it if you're unsure about boat safety or want assurance of being back on time.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard; sun is intense. Rent snorkel gear at the beach ($10–15 USD) if you don't have your own.
  • Pig Beach is iconic but pricey and crowded; if you're budget-conscious or have little kids, skip it and snorkel the local reefs instead for a fraction of the cost.
