La Possession is a working cruise dock on the west side of Reunion, not a port where you step off and immediately have a busy tourist center. Ships berth at a pier, and from there most worthwhile sights require a taxi, private transfer, or organized tour.

For a short visit, the smartest choices are usually Saint-Denis, a west-coast beach stop, or a scenic drive with one or two well-chosen viewpoints. Reunion is a large, mountainous island, so road time matters more than people expect.

This is a better port for a targeted half-day than for wandering. If your ship has a long call, you can do more, but the port still works best when you keep the plan simple and realistic.

Is It Safe?

La Possession itself is a standard working port area, so the main issue is logistics, not cruise-port crime drama. The real risk is wasting your day in traffic or returning late because you underestimated distances.

In Saint-Denis and other town areas, use normal city caution with bags, phones, and valuables. Stick to reputable drivers and keep your return timing conservative, especially if your ship is leaving in the afternoon.

Accessibility & Walkability

The port is not a good walk-off option for most people. Expect taxis or vehicles for almost everything useful, and be ready for heat, curb cuts that are inconsistent, and sidewalks that can be patchy outside the main areas.
