Lauffen am Neckar sits on a bend in the Neckar River in Baden-Württemberg, about 50 kilometres north of Stuttgart. River cruise ships dock directly at a pier in or near the town, making this one of the few ports where you step ashore and are already in the destination. There is no transfer involved.

The town is small — around 11,000 residents — and its appeal is entirely tied to its medieval core. The signature sight is the Regiswindiskirche, a Romanesque church perched on a rocky island in the Neckar, connected by a pedestrian bridge. The surrounding Altstadt has preserved half-timbered buildings, a town wall section, and narrow lanes that have barely changed in centuries.

Lauffen is also wine country. This is Württemberg Trollinger territory, and the local wine cooperative and small Weinstuben give you an authentic, unhurried taste of regional culture. Do not come expecting a cosmopolitan stop. This is an honest, quiet German small town — and for cruisers who want that, it delivers well within a half day.
