Choose the Right Port Day

Best Overall
Naturalist-guided island walk combined with snorkeling. This is why you're here—wildlife and geology, not town life.
Best Beach
South Plaza has rocky, dramatic coastline rather than sandy beach. Snorkeling from the rocks is common; bring a rash guard and water shoes.
With Kids
Child-friendly naturalist walk on the upper plateau (easy, flat terrain). Kids enjoy spotting iguanas and sea lions from safe distance. Snorkeling may not suit very young children due to rough entry.
Only 3-4 Hours
Book the operator's guided island walk (included or ~$50–100 USD if optional). See land iguanas, sea lions, and red-and-green rock formations. Return for lunch onboard.
Cheapest Option
All activities are bundled into cruise fare. No independent shopping or dining ashore. Snorkel gear is ship-provided.
What To Avoid
Do not wander alone; the island is protected and requires authorized guides. Avoid touching or feeding wildlife, even though it seems approachable. Do not expect ATMs, restaurants, or gift shops.

Top Things To Do

1

Naturalist-guided island walk with wildlife viewing

Led by trained naturalists, this walk explores the upper plateau and cliff edges. Expect to see land iguanas, red-and-green rock formations, seabirds (frigatebirds, boobies), and Galápagos sea lions. The walk is educational and photographically rewarding.

1.5–2.5 hours Included in cruise fare or $50–100 USD if optional.$$

⚡ Popular — books out early. Reserve before you sail.

2

Snorkeling from the rocks

Snorkel in clear, shallow waters populated by sea turtles, tropical fish, rays, and occasionally sharks. Water entry is from rocks; some swell may occur. Operator or guide-led, or semi-independent after briefing.

45 minutes to 1 hour Included in cruise fare or $40–80 USD if optional.$$

Book with the ship, or on your own?

Booking independently

  • Often noticeably cheaper than the ship’s version of the same tour.
  • Smaller groups and local operators, with traveler reviews you can read before you pay.
  • Free cancellation on most tours, usually up to 24 hours before.

When the ship’s excursion makes sense

  • Short port calls or long transfers where the timing is tight.
  • Tender-only stops where getting ashore can run late.
  • The ship waits for its own delayed excursions — it won’t wait for independent ones, so leave a buffer before all-aboard.

Port Overview

South Plaza is a small, protected island in the central Galápagos accessible only by tender from your ship at anchor. There are no docks, piers, shops, or dining—just raw geology, endemic wildlife, and guided naturalist activities. The island hosts land iguanas, Galápagos sea lions, and seabirds against reddish volcanic cliffs and sparse vegetation. Almost all visits are 3–4 hours and include a guided walk and optional snorkeling. This is a pure nature experience, not a port town. Your ship's naturalists and Ecuadorian guides lead all activities; independent exploration is not permitted. Expect to tender in small boats, sometimes in choppy conditions, and wear water shoes or reef shoes.

Is It Safe?

South Plaza is a protected national park with strict rules. Stay with your guide group at all times; do not wander alone. Wildlife is habituated to humans but is wild—do not approach, touch, or feed animals. Sea lion bulls can be aggressive if you come between a mother and pup. Respect the 6-foot (2-meter) minimum distance guideline. The landing can be wet and rocks are slippery; wear water shoes with good grip. Sun exposure is intense due to equatorial reflection off bare rock; reapply sunscreen often and drink water. Tender operations depend on sea conditions; rough swells may force cancellation or delay.

Accessibility & Walkability

South Plaza has no paved paths or infrastructure. Terrain is rocky volcanic ground with uneven surfaces and some loose lava. There are no railings, wheelchair access, or accessible facilities. The walk is moderate in difficulty but requires reasonable mobility and balance. Tender boarding involves steps, wet platforms, and sometimes a wet landing; mobility-impaired guests should consult the cruise line beforehand. If you have knee, hip, or balance concerns, discuss the difficulty level with ship staff before booking optional excursions.

Outside the Terminal

There is no terminal building or dock infrastructure. Tenders arrive at a designated sandy or rocky beach landing. The immediate area is natural island landscape—sparse vegetation, volcanic rock, and wildlife. You will see sea lions, iguanas, and seabirds within minutes of landing. Your guide group assembles on the beach before the walk begins. Restroom facilities are aboard your ship only.

Beaches Near the Port

South Plaza landing beach (rocky cove)

Not a traditional sandy beach. A small rocky/sandy cove used as the primary tender landing. Water entry can be wet. The surrounding shoreline is dramatic volcanic rock with sea lions hauled out.

Distance
On-island; reached by tender.
Cost
Included in cruise fare.
Best for
Snorkeling, wildlife spotting, and tender boarding. Not for sunbathing or relaxation.

Local Food & Drink

There are no restaurants, cafés, or food vendors on South Plaza. All meals are served aboard your ship. If your port day is 4 hours, plan to eat breakfast before tendering ashore and lunch after returning. Bring a water bottle; sun and activity increase dehydration. The ship's dining venues will have light lunch options or snacks available if you return before the formal service.

Shopping

There is no shopping on South Plaza. No gift shop, no artisanal vendors, no souvenirs for sale ashore. All curio and gift shopping must be done aboard your ship or in other Galápagos ports (e.g., Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz). Bring any essentials—sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent—from the ship's shop or mainland.

Money & Currency

Currency
USD (US Dollar).
USD Accepted?
Yes
Card Payments
Not applicable; no vendors ashore.
ATMs
No ATMs on the island.
Tipping
Tipping is done aboard the ship for guides and crew. Cash tips for guides (if they are independent contractors) may be accepted; check with your cruise line's policy.
Notes
All costs are pre-paid as part of your cruise fare. Bring sufficient cash for any optional shore excursions not bundled into the ticket, though most Galápagos expedition cruises include all excursions.

Weather & Best Time

Best months
June to December (cooler, drier, better snorkeling visibility).
Avoid
February to April (hottest, higher rainfall, rougher seas).
Temperature
Year-round 70–80°F (21–27°C) air; 68–75°F (20–24°C) water.
Notes
Galápagos weather is unpredictable. Dress in layers and bring a rain jacket. Sea conditions affect tender operations; calm anchorages are not guaranteed.

Airport Information

Airport
Seymour International Airport (GPS) / San Cristóbal Airport (SCY).
Distance
Seymour is ~40 miles from central islands; San Cristóbal is ~5 miles from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal.
Getting there
Cruise itineraries typically begin/end at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal) or Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz). Some guests fly into mainland Ecuador and connect via commercial Galápagos flights. Check your cruise documents for embarkation logistics.
Notes
South Plaza is a remote anchorage; not the arrival/departure port. Your cruise will begin or end at a larger settlement port.

Practical Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Bring a good underwater camera or GoPro if you snorkel; marine life is prolific and close. Waterproof bag or case is essential.
  • Wear a rash guard under your wetsuit or over your skin to prevent chafing and reduce sun exposure. Many cruisers underestimate equatorial UV intensity at sea level.
  • Arrive at tender boarding early and bring everything you might need (sunscreen, water, light jacket) because there is no place to buy or shelter ashore.
  • If the seas are rough, tender landings may be wet or postponed. Have patience and follow crew instructions; safety comes first.
