Port Overview

South Plaza is a small, protected island in the central Galápagos accessible only by tender from your ship at anchor. There are no docks, piers, shops, or dining—just raw geology, endemic wildlife, and guided naturalist activities. The island hosts land iguanas, Galápagos sea lions, and seabirds against reddish volcanic cliffs and sparse vegetation. Almost all visits are 3–4 hours and include a guided walk and optional snorkeling. This is a pure nature experience, not a port town. Your ship's naturalists and Ecuadorian guides lead all activities; independent exploration is not permitted. Expect to tender in small boats, sometimes in choppy conditions, and wear water shoes or reef shoes.

Is It Safe?

South Plaza is a protected national park with strict rules. Stay with your guide group at all times; do not wander alone. Wildlife is habituated to humans but is wild—do not approach, touch, or feed animals. Sea lion bulls can be aggressive if you come between a mother and pup. Respect the 6-foot (2-meter) minimum distance guideline. The landing can be wet and rocks are slippery; wear water shoes with good grip. Sun exposure is intense due to equatorial reflection off bare rock; reapply sunscreen often and drink water. Tender operations depend on sea conditions; rough swells may force cancellation or delay.

Accessibility & Walkability

South Plaza has no paved paths or infrastructure. Terrain is rocky volcanic ground with uneven surfaces and some loose lava. There are no railings, wheelchair access, or accessible facilities. The walk is moderate in difficulty but requires reasonable mobility and balance. Tender boarding involves steps, wet platforms, and sometimes a wet landing; mobility-impaired guests should consult the cruise line beforehand. If you have knee, hip, or balance concerns, discuss the difficulty level with ship staff before booking optional excursions.

Outside the Terminal

There is no terminal building or dock infrastructure. Tenders arrive at a designated sandy or rocky beach landing. The immediate area is natural island landscape—sparse vegetation, volcanic rock, and wildlife. You will see sea lions, iguanas, and seabirds within minutes of landing. Your guide group assembles on the beach before the walk begins. Restroom facilities are aboard your ship only.
