The town has a genuine, lived-in character with a mixed Romanian and Ukrainian heritage. Fishing is still the primary livelihood. Streets are narrow, unpaved in places, and lined with low wooden houses and vegetable gardens. There are no cruise-focused shops, no chain cafes, and no tourist traps — which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your travel style.

Vylkove is primarily a gateway to the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, one of Europe's largest wetlands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The delta is famous for birdwatching — pelicans, herons, cormorants, and over 300 species pass through. If your ship offers a dedicated delta boat tour, that is the headline activity. Without it, the town itself offers a quiet two-hour walk at best.

Vylkove is a small, low-crime village and petty theft is not a notable concern. The main practical risks are environmental — uneven paths, muddy ground, and the very real possibility of getting disoriented in the delta waterways if you venture out independently without a guide. Stick to marked paths and always go on the water with a local who knows the channels.

As of 2022, Ukraine has been affected by active armed conflict. Vylkove is in a southern region far from the main front lines, but the situation remains fluid. There is essentially no tourist shopping in Vylkove. You may find a local selling smoked fish, honey, or homemade preserves near the landing or main street. That's about it.
